Description:
A fantastic opportunity to explore a beautiful but remote area of northwest Scotland. Assynt and Coigach contain some of my favourite Scottish landscapes and there is a good mix of coastal and mountain scenery. The coastline is varied with stunning white sandy beaches, azure blue seas and dramatic rocky cliffs, while the mountains are distinctive and impressive.
Locations include:
Achnahaird and the mountains of Coigach
Lochinver and Suilven
Loch Assynt and Ardvreck castle
Clachtoll, Achmelvich and Stoer Beach
Stoer Point Lighthouse
Clashnessie and Wailing Widow falls
These locations are a guide only and are subject to change depending upon the conditions.
The photography side of the workshop will be accompanied by some time with the computer looking at post processing using Lightroom and Photoshop. We will cover workflow and how to get the best from your images as well as looking at some more advanced techniques including panoramas, bracketing and focus stacking. I am keen to promote a relaxed and informal atmosphere on my workshops and there will be plenty of time for group discussion and image review.
The format of each day will vary depending on the weather and locations but we aim to take sunrise (8.20am) and sunset (4.00pm). Dinner in the evening will be informal home cooking in the cottage (included) or a meal out in a local establishment (not included).
Why choose a Scotland workshop with me?
I have been coming to Scotland annually for the last 15 years. It is somewhere I feel a complete affinity for and somewhere I have got to know really well. It is a landscape that inspires me and one that I love to photograph.
This workshop is based in a large shared house which I feel is an ideal way to explore the Highlands. Breakfast can be as early or as late as we need it to be and we have more flexibility than we would have in a hotel. The reception areas provide a comfortable environment for relaxed evenings of image sharing and post processing as well as complete relaxation.
This workshop will be a small group of 4 and the whole session will be run on a relaxed basis with the emphasis on fun and great photography. At the heart of all my workshops is the joy that being out in the natural world brings.
My workshops are relaxed, fun fill sessions that forge friendships and inspire creativity.
Workshop duration
We will meet at the accommodation in the afternoon of Sunday 21st November and the workshop will finish after breakfast on Saturday 27th November.
Suitability
Photographically this workshop is suitable for all no matter what level you are at or what camera you use.
The aim is to get to know a beautiful location with a group of like minded individuals. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 4 participants with two tutors allowing plenty of individual attention for all. We will cover a range of photographic techniques and will be taking in some diverse locations giving a stimulating few days whatever your ability.
Fitness
Whilst we will not be walking large distances every day it will help to have a good general level of fitness. There are no very long hikes but the terrain is rough and boggy and there are some locations that require a 30-45 minute walk from the car over undulating ground. Having said that there are other locations that require less effort and are much closer to the car park.
What to bring
You will need your camera, a selection of lenses preferably a wide angle and a telephoto, a tripod, memory cards and space batteries. If you have filters please bring them. If you don’t you are welcome to borrow some for the session. It will also be advantageous to bring a laptop if you have one. This will allow you to take advantage of some post processing tuition.
You will also need some good outdoor clothing, a waterproof coat, waterproof over trousers and some good walking boots.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of this workshop before booking then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
