The ethos behind my photography.

My approach to photography

I believe that to make good photographs we have to care about the landscapes we are photographing . This requires knowledge which in turn creates a connection with the world around us. I believe it is this connection that is the key to a good landscape image. It allows us to see something beyond the obvious and produce images that say something different.

When it comes to traveling to new locations this connection takes time to establish when the landscapes are completely unknown to us. This is where my photography workshops come in. Because I only run workshops in areas I really know and understand I can pass my connection and love for the landscape on to my clients.

During my workshops you will learn about the landscapes you are photographing. You will get a feel for the geology,  the natural flora and fauna, the weather and light and all the elements that make the landscape you are working in special. Together with technical and compositional techniques you will have a raft of knowledge to draw on to help you create the best possible images from the locations you are visiting.

My experience

I have been working as a full time photographer since 2012 and have been running workshops since 2018. I never run any workshops in places that I don’t know intimately. I specialise in landscapes that I live in or have been visiting for years. This gives me an intimate knowledge of the locations, their features and how the landscape behaves in different weather conditions and at different times of the year.

My workshops

My workshops are relaxed, fun fill sessions that forge friendships and inspire creativity. All my workshops are composed of small groups. For my residential workshops these are groups of 4 and for my day workshops the group size is 5.

My approach in the landscape

When I am running a workshop my time belongs to the group. I am not there to make my own images, I am there to work with you so that you can achieve your goals. Advice will always be available and there will always be time for individual attention and tuition.

My approach to post processing

Most of my day workshops have image reviews and post processing sessions after the workshop. These are usually carried out over Zoom.

During residential workshops I offer image reviews and post processing sessions in the evenings. I also take my printer to residential workshops so that all clients get a chance to take home a print of their favourite shot from the session.

Post processing, for me, is part of the creative process. I work in Lightroom and Photoshop and describe my approach as akin to painting, but with a fully formed canvas. I work by emphasising and de emphasising different parts of the scene, drawing the viewers eye to the important parts of the image.
